Post "Gokusen" movie earns half a billion in opening weekend

The highly anticipated "Gokusen: The Movie" opened on 409 screens in Japan this past weekend. On Saturday and Sunday, more than 402,000 fans saw the film in theaters, earning "Gokusen" close to 490 million yen.

According to a statement by distributor Toho on Monday, the movie is projected to gross more than 4 billion yen by the end of its run.

In comparison, the "ROOKIES" movie opened several weeks ago on 428 screens, and it earned over 1.2 billion yen in its first two days.

Only 4 billion yen? Hana yori Dango final grossed 7.75 billion yen, nearly twice as much. And if I remember correctly, even Yamapi's Kusonagi grossed more than 3 billion yen with only Yamapi as the main attraction. I'd say the highly anticipated Gokusen the movie fails to meet expectation for a very high rated drama series. I think the movie is just not interesting enough.

ROOKIES is the winner for sure.

they should have put Shin and Hayato in the movie then maybe it will gross around 8 billion yen like HnD final from last year.

I agree. Although we'll never know but with Shin and Hayato, the movie might be able to gross as much as Hana yori Dango final.

Gokusen the movie will have competition next week with the opening of Harry Potter and the half-blood Prince on July 15. Hope it can keep up with the onslaught of Harry Potter fans.

lol.. I agree.. GOkusen Movie - well its expected right? Nothing new and the cast isnt really fresh either. This doesnt amount to anything considering the fact that the cast is suppose to be popular stars so that means big TFs right.

HYD movie did very well. - its TBS produced so is Kurosagi. I cudve sworn they are by the same director.- Though considering the budget Id say Kurosagi is the most successful since it has the lowest budget = about 2 million US raking billions in gross.so TBS really did made tons of money... screw the duck that lays gold..the boy is gold himself..ok lame joke -

side comment: I hope Boku no Hatsukoi wud do well... sory totally unrelated.

I don't care how well Kurosagi end sell is, since Gukusen is just started, but with somewhere arnd 5 million USD opening weekend only, Gokusen is fairing quite well ^^

Wow, the numbers are pretty disappointing considering it pretty much has most of the biggest young actors in this movie. I've never seen a movie with so many big names before- but in all honesty, the Gokusen storyline has been repeated and butchered so many times in the first 3 series that I don't think the plot for the movie will be that interesting either. I'm still looking forward to this movie for the ikemen actors, although it was disappointing to learn that Matsumoto Jun and Akanishi Jin are not in it.

the number is low for a movie with all the hypes, promos and has lots of ikemen starring in it. but what do you expect for an interesting plot line that's been repeating over and over again.
