NTV has announced that its annual charity telethon "24 Hour Television" will have popular boy band NEWS as its main personalities this year. Now in its 32nd year, the telethon has featured Johnny's talents for seven years straight.
This year's telethon will be at Tokyo Big Sight instead of the usual Nippon Budokan. The event, whose theme is "START! ~Ippo wo Fumidasou~," will be held on August 29-30. Link to article |

Can somebody please clarify this? I know the source is from a TABLOID article but 24hr TV have been going on for years so why are they just now revealed about payment for the personalities? I would like to know NEWS fans take on this. |

I think it's true but I don't see that it's a big deal. It seems that they paid all the celebrities who take/took part in it. I always thought that even though it's a charity, celebrities should at least get paid, maybe at a discount but they should get paid. Well, there are a lot of work and people involved in the show. The director and the staffs all get paid, right? So why not the celebrities? Just because they're famous and presumably are richer? But they put much effort in working the event too and many people tune in because of them. Why should they do it for free? It should be counted as part of the expenses to get the event/show going.
And I read somewhere before that Japanese celebrities, especially Johnny's boys, are not earning that much compared to Western stars. |

Johnny's get paid a salary by their agency. They don't get paid per performance, so it doesn't really matter that other celebrities are paid for these kind of shows. I wonder if stars in America are paid to be on things like American Idol gives back.

Not all of them though. Some Johnny idols get paid based on their earning too, especially those like SMAP and Kinki. I know because SMAP and Kinki members have been constantly listed under highest tax-payer celebrities released by Japanese officials. I'm not sure about everyone in NEWS, but I believe YamaPi may get paid a salary AND per performance fee/bonus.

I think everyone gets a salary plus pay for extra things. From what I've heard CMs and hostings for TV shows gets extra payment and also drama earnings are somewhat based on ratings.
Since SMAP and Kinki Kids do a lot of TV shows and CMs of course they have higher incomes. Nakai got the most from what I remember (since a few years the taxes are no longer published) because he had the most TV shows. |

i read that dbsk is suing their management for 'slave' contracts, but there aren't any issues like that in johnny's entertainment even if they are only paid some fixed salaries? i'm wondering because je group seems happy in their career and looks like they really look forward to their future with je from what i can see

Another thing, those who managed to debut has gone through hours of training during their junior time. Of course they should feel glad and happy. So far so good. As long as johnny stays as the most powerful agency in japan, then, their future is secured. It doesn't matter if they can't act, johnny can wrestle the tv execs in giving them a spot. But they have to follow the so-called slavery contract, which I believe although they may not earn much, but they did earn more than enough to have lavish hobby. A bit different from thsk. That group doesn't rely just on Korea anymore. They are well-received in Japan and the members realised they deserved better contract. Thus, the lawsuit. So what if their agency exercise a control over the rest of Korean's entertainment industry. They can go to Japan, and they did. Unlike johnny's groups. |

je groups are well received in other countries too...the difference is that the je guys are trained from early childhood, they join the company when they're really young, even before they reach their teens, and are already being trained once they join...the company trains them, looks after them, shape them into idols...and once they debut, they stay with the company for a very long time, usually when they retire. so je is like a "second home" to these guys, so of course they can't leave the company! some of them did though...but where did they end up? so it's not really that much about how popular they are...je is their "home", these guys virtually grew up in the company, so it's hard for them to leave.
yeah, dbsk can just go to japan if everything becomes too hard for them in korea, but if they leave korea & sm, i wonder how long they can last...u gotta admit, sm is responsible for a lot of their promotions which lead to their fame...if they leave, then i doubt they would last very long anyway...just look at all the other groups which left sm...let's just hope they don't become the next "shinhwa". |
