Post SMAP's Kusanagi arrested for indecency

SMAP member Tsuyoshi Kusanagi (34) has been arrested for public indecency after causing a disturbance and running around naked in Hinokicho Park near Tokyo Midtown late on Wednesday night.

At around 3:00am on April 23, residents in that area notified police that a naked man was making a lot of noise in the park. Officers arrived to find a drunken Kusanagi, and after he refused to heed their warnings, they arrested him on the spot for public indecency. Kusanagi is said to have openly defied the officers, answering them with "What's wrong with me being naked?" According to police, a breath analysis test taken 5 hours after Kusanagi's arrest detected a BrAC of 0.8 mg/L, well over the legal limit.

Kusanagi has been part of the super-popular group SMAP since 1988. As he is one of the industry's biggest stars, the incident is likely to have a big impact. He is already being pulled from several advertisements, including commercials promoting Japan's transition to all-digital broadcasts by 2011.

One of the most recent reports says that he has lost his somewhat regular role on NHK's "PythagoraSwitch." Fuji TV will likely have the toughest decision to make, as Kusanagi is a regular on four of the network's popular shows.

Kusanagi also has a starring role with Yui Aragaki in the movie "Ballad: Namonaki Koi no Uta" (directed by Takashi Yamazaki). Filming has already wrapped up and the picture was scheduled for a September 5 release, putting distributor Toho in a difficult spot. TV Asahi is also considering their options, as it had planned to run some TV specials about the film on weekends from April 25 to May 18.

This news doesn't surprise too much. The arrest does however even though it was a minor offense.

I remember watching the Sanma Smap Christmas special last December and Shingo talked about how Tsuyoshi got so drunk and started beating him up when they were outside. While they were in the cab going home, Shingo was saying how much Tsuyoshi was crying while apologizing and stuff. Shingo, in the meantime, was consoling him in the cab and checking his face repeatedly since he was the one who got pretty bad. I think he said he was bleeding and stuff.

So yeah, Kusanagi's drunken antics is not surprising, but the arrest is.

Yeah I can totally see Kusanagi doing this!

And I'm not disappointed in him at all - I think this was pretty awesome It's just too bad that he'll get a lot of negative publicity for this.

I feel very sad for Tsuyoshi.

I don't understand why he has ended doing that but, I hope the scandal gets minor and he can go back to work normally.

Hmm, well...

Let me assume something here that my father has seen often enough, that I have seen often enough.

He was drunk like, as we say it, thousand Russians, naked and running around screaming at night.

Somebody eventually called the police.

The police answers to a call concerning a public disturbance. They get the details about screaming and what not. So, knowing the TMP, they may have come with 2-3 cars, counting 4-6 officers (standard would be one car, but it's Tokyo and the TMP reacts strongly to such disturbance calls, at least from my experience, so far I've only seen them answer to disturbance calls in force.)

They arrive, finding Kusanagi screaming, naked and drunk. The first thing officers usually do in such a case is being polite. "Get dressed please, stop shouting." If you cooperate they will remain civil, they might take you in over the night and then you can leave next morning.

Somehow I don't think that Kusanagi stayed civil. Drunk people are usually a rogue card. You never know what they'll do. So I would assume that he started shouting abuse at the cops. That's the moment when officers usually start being a bit more forceful. They will put a foot down. I guess they ordered him to get dressed and that he was to come with them. Temporary arrest, for a few hours, is quite normal in such cases. After that you can go. Should there be charges, you'll get the note anyway. Any fees, you can pay them at the station and be done with it.

But apparently -according to the latest news- he's still in custody (Harajuku police station), so that would mean that he may have resisted arrest. Not even in Japan cops keep you that long in custody if it's just a minor thing. Should he have resisted arrest, well, if he's really unlucky, he might end in court.

But as I said, all of this is assumption based on my father's (he was a cop for some 30 years) and my own experiences with drunk people.

Obviously it's not awesome for his career, but I think everyone needs to let it all out sometimes. And when that results in something harmless like this, I think we should all be able to just laugh it off.

Maybe it's because I'm imagining a cheerfully drunk Kusanagi (which I feel fits his character). But looking back at his blood alcohol level, it was probably a more unpleasant affair, so I'd have to change my opinion. Still, this doesn't make me think any less of him.

Akinaka: That sounds pretty accurate. The news did say that he was warned but he didn't comply, so they arrested him. I'm wondering just how strongly he resisted arrest, though.

Angry

I wonder how long he'll have to disappear from the public eye. Uchi Hiroki took years to come back from his scandal and I'm not even sure what Kusano's doing now.

Poor SMAP.
