Post "Atsuhime" achieves best ratings since 1997

The final ratings data are now in for the NHK taiga drama "Atsuhime." The popular show, starring Aoi Miyazaki, ended its run on Sunday with its 50th episode, which averaged 28.7% in the Kanto area. That fell slightly short of its highest rating - 29.2% for episode #48 - but it still helped raise the show's overall average to 24.5%. This makes it the highest rated taiga drama in the 12-year period since "Hideyoshi" in 1997, which averaged 30.5%.

The show started out at only 20.3% in January, but ratings gradually rose throughout the year. For the final episode, ratings peaked at 34.9%.

Next year's taiga drama, "Tenchijin" starring Satoshi Tsumabuki, premieres on January 4.

Only reason for this: the Miyazaki Bonus. Without her it would have bombed. The storyline was awful (main character far too hyped, the gal was unimportant in the Bakumatsu, the survival of the Tokugawa has to be credited to the Princess Kazu and not to some random lady-in-waiting), Atsu was absolutely cheesy. Frankly, if not for Miyazaki, it would have been the most awful Taiga for years.

Default Atsuhime in Real Life

I'm glad the show did so well. I really enjoyed the acting. Atsuhime's story is a classic.

To see a photo of the real Atsuhime's palanquin and learn a bit more about her, visit:

Default Atsuhime & Aoi

I love Atsuhime. It's the first taiga drama that I've seen. I would say that it was Aoi Miyazaki's brilliant and superb acting that led me to watch the drama from the beginning to the end. Thumbs up for Aoi!
