Last week, Nikkan Sports announced the results of its summer survey for the Nikkan Sports Drama Grand Prix. A total of 24,757 votes were collected between September 25 and October 4. The big winner this time was the TBS series "Maou," winning in all four categories that it was nominated for.
The show received about 12,600 votes for Best Drama, handily beating "Code Blue" by close to 5,000 votes. At #3 was "33-pun Tantei," far behind at only 1,300 votes, followed by "Atsuhime" and "Shibatora" with less than 800 votes apiece. Satoshi Ohno beat Tomohisa Yamashita in the Best Actor category by roughly 2,500 votes. "Maou" co-star Toma Ikuta also made the list at #3. For Best Supporting Actor, Kei Tanaka edged out the competition, and the top 5 were all either from "Maou" or "Code Blue." Ryoko Kobayashi gave "Maou" its fourth award as Best Supporting Actress, while the rest of the votes were split among the three female leads from "Code Blue" and Mikako Tabe. The only category that "Maou" didn't win was the Best Actress award, due to its lack of a starring female role. Aoi Miyazaki received about 8,200 votes for her role in "Atsuhime," with young star Mirai Shida ("Seigi no Mikata") trailing by 3,500 votes to land in second. The complete results are available in the forums. Link to article |

These results are pretty ridiculous. Looking at these awards, you'd think there were only three or four dramas on TV last season!
Thanks to kowaretarakuen who pointed out on the blog that the awards were already announced! |

I'm happy to see Shida Mirai as #2 under Best Actress, even though I think she should have been #1. No offense to any Miyazaki fans, but Atsuhime is really just... MEH. A series about Kazunomiya would have made more sense, she was somewhat significant (even though I can think of several women in the Bakumatsu who were more important than any of the wome in the Great Interior). Atsuhime was... well, the survival of the Tokugawa was not really her work anyway (that was mainly the princess Kazu's work), and that's pretty much it. She's not credited with anything else of even remote importance.
Though, it may be a pattern with Taigas. Good, bad, good, bad, good, bad, etc. Since Fuurinkazan was good, and Atsuhime was lousy... next year's should be good again. Hopefully. Code Blue second... with that plot and that script? Oi... If they ever pull up a "doctor heli" system like in the series, I'm only going to Japan with a lawyer. Code Blue, if you want to know how a emergency air rescue service DOENS'T work, watch it. Honestly, sending surgeons -trainees at that, who have ZERO experience- out with the choppers... oivech, who has such an idea? These guys can't even tube properly (of course, how could they, it's not part of their job, they don't learn it, they don't do it on a daily basis) and I have yet to see one surgeon who'd risk his golden hands at an accident outside. Honestly... meh! That said... I'm surprised Yamada Yuu isn't anywhere among the top 5. I was really -and pleasently- surprised by her in Seigi no Mikata. Really, the results are a tad bit odd. Then again, I don't care too much about such surveys. I buy the dramas I like. The rest *makes a penguin fart noise* Last edited by Penguin : 10-19-2008 at 08:46 PM. |

It's not ridiculous if you watched Maou in its entirety, to be honest. Ohno was utterly magnificent in his role throughout and you'd have to be blind or ridiculously biased not to acknowledge that. Every episode was hard-hitting and they utilized every character well. I'm glad it won most of the awards.
I like Miyazaki Aoi but I actually voted for Shida Mirai for Best Actress. She was hilarious in Seigi no Mikata. |

I also would've liked to see Shida take #1. She's a really good actress for her age. |

What? I didn't see Tabe Mikako on the list for supporting actress - I would have voted for her.
And I think Hongo Kanata should have been on the list for supporting actor, considering Shida Mirai was up for best actress. But overall, I am very satisfied with these results. I don't remember if Yamada Yu was up for best actress, supporting actress, or anything at all, but I think she should have won over Kobayashi Ryoko. I thought her performance in Maou was kind of ehh-ish. And last, I think the results were probably greatly affected by foreign voters this time. There were instruction posts in LJ communities and everything. I hope people in Japan take notice of this (if there's IP tracking and all) and, at the very least, release more dramas on DVD with English subtitles! |

I think Maou derserves to be #1 drama despite the fact that I very much prefer the original version. The Korean 'Devil' is superb. My only regret is that I think Toma Ikuta is a far better choice to be Best Actor rather than Satoshi Ohno, he should have won the Best Actor choice. Ikuta is quite natural in acting and he has done a great job here. Ohno is so stoney, all his facial expressions are too 'obvious'. Honestly, very surprised to see people praising his acting... But since both Ohno and Yamashita are, I would say, more popular than Ikuta, I am not surprised to see them as #1 & # 2.

"Ohno was utterly magnificent in his role throughout and you'd have to be blind or ridiculously biased not to acknowledge that. " Toma Ikuta popularity surpasses Ohno's by a big margin. Ohno was not listed in the very popular An-an ranking at all but Toma did. Toma name was ranked higher than Ohno's in the goo (Japanese google?) most searched male name. I think what helped him winning was because of Arashi's fans voting and of course he was far better in portraying Naruse than Toma effort to play Serizawa (even most of Toma fans acknowledged this). Toma did a good job but not enough to beat Ohno imo. However it has never been a competition between those two. Opinions on acting are very subjective. |
