Reports have come in that 18-year-old actor Yuya Yagira was hospitalized early Friday morning after an apparent suicide attempt. Yagira had attempted to overdose on drugs in his Tokyo apartment, but someone called emergency assistance and he was taken to a hospital. His condition is said to currently be stable.
Reasons for Yagira's suicide attempt are unknown at this time. His agency has not mentioned any details, but they said that they are currently looking into the matter. In 2004, Yagira became the youngest winner of the Best Actor award at Cannes for his performance in Hirokazu Koreeda's "Nobody Knows." He has appeared in a few movies and television dramas since then, including last year's "Houtai Club" and a voice role in the animated "Genius Party." Link to article |

I bet there has been a lot of pressure on this youth since his win. Everyone needs to back off, he's only 18.

It pains me to read this, as I'm one of the many people taken by his performance as the responsible older brother, in the "abandoned kids" poetic masterpiece. Somehow a part of me isn't surprised by this...all the roles he had since Nobody Knows, were shameful comparison for the promise he showed as an amateur actor. He had simply become a teen idol-star with a prestige award, entering the sausage factory of commercial movie-making. I hope he comes out of this stronger (like Yosuke Kubozuka) & finds himself again. Maybe Kore-eda should have a sit-down with him...

This is so depressing. I hope he's able to recover and someday return to acting, although his mental health is the most important thing. He's one of the best young actors Japan has. Reminds me of Yosuke Kubozuka who apparently tried to kill himself once as well...

It's good to know that it wasn't suicide after all. |
