In March, it was revealed that Korean director Bong Joon-ho ("The Host") and French directors Michel Gondry ("Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind") and Leos Carax ("Pola X") are working on a triptych film set in Japan, titled "Tokyo!" A few details have now been announced.
Each of the three strange tales will last about half an hour, making for a total runtime of approximately 90 minutes. Carax's segment will use a French cast and staff, while the other two directors will mainly use a Japanese cast and staff. The segments are titled "Shaking Tokyo" (Joon-ho), "Hiroko & Akira in Tokyo" (Gondry), and "Merde" (Carax). Filming begins in late August. The directors are aiming to take the film to Cannes in May. Some plot details were mentioned, but I didn't include it in the main article since I'm not exactly sure how accurately I'm translating these; the descriptions are a bit ambiguous and confusing.
"Shaking Tokyo" - A story of a man who has been living as a hikikomori (one who has withdrawn from society) for 11 years, until he falls in love with a delivery woman from a pizza shop. But when he finally works up his courage to go outside, he discovers that the rest of Tokyo has also become withdrawn. "Hiroko & Akira in Tokyo" - A woman from Hokkaido comes to Tokyo with her boyfriend, who is aiming to become a movie writer. However, she has no purpose of her own. One day, she notices that part of her ribs are turning into wood... "Merde" - A story about a man who appears from the sewers in unexpected places. An incident leads to his capture, which is met with mixed reactions by the townspeople. |
