Default The new Evangelion

although everyone might think im talking about the new movies, this thread isnt about that (or at least i dont think it is, we'll find out in sept i guess). im talkin bout the new manga series by gainax that has just released book 3 lately here in japan. i had my doubts when i first saw it but, after three books, i can safely say that its pretty damn entertaining.

Imagine, if you will, an evangelion world in which 2nd impact didnt happen. a world where yui and asukas mom are still alive and the kids get to do the fun high school stuff that they were always prohibited to do in the first series. (like the school trip to okinawa). you might be thinking "whats the point of it if all that has changed?" and thats what i thought too. and even tho i have yet to see an eva in the manga as of yet, i know its coming, and all the elements are still there.

when you think about it, eva was always a lot more about the people than all the crazy crap that was going on around them. characters still react very much in the way that you would expect given the circumstances and i think a lot of thought went into making the characters true to the orginal. its really kinda amazing how i havent been disappointed with the characters so far... the biggest difference between old and new versions of characters tho is definately gendo and ray. gendos purpose hasnt changed since yui is still alive, so he has no reason to be a sinical bastard which directly effects ray since she spends most her time with him (and yui) resulting in a ray that can actually smile without being told when to do so. infact seeing ray almost kinda stand up for herself now as the story progresses makes her more appealing to me. (dont get it wrong tho... she has her depressing "why am i even alive?" moments as well) overall, pretty impressive how the characters feel like the same people even tho the situation is completely different.

on the other hand, as of now, i dont see this as something every fan of the first series will enjoy. the first series delt with feelings of the characters and their relationships with others. although this series continues that idea, the relationships are different and because of the not so depressing times set in the manga as of now, the problems arent quite as serious. that is definately not to say that things wont change tho and im looking forward to what will happen next. so anyway, if you like eva and want to challenge reading a manga in jp, definately recommend you look into it.

Is this the one you're referring to?

I actually hadn't heard of that until now; I'm still trying to get around to finishing Girlfriend of Steel. I should probably take a trip to Kinokuniya soon and pick up both series.
