“Engulfed within her emotions, no matter what song, it’s meaningful to the heart”
[Oricon] It’s been about a year since your last album, right?
[YUI] I’m really happy to be able to make a third album. I feel very satisfied because I put my heart into making each song. Things have changed since the first and even the second album. In the third one, I discovered many new things.
[Oricon] What are those things you’ve discovered?
[YUI] I learned about new types of sound that can be used as well as different ways of expression in lyrics. Then within myself, there’s more… like I discovered things about myself that I’ve never noticed before. All of that, I wrote into my music. It doesn’t matter which song it is, they all came from me. I can kind of say that I’ve gained more self-confidence. Since they’re mostly about what ‘s been on my mind, I can only ask that you listen.
[Oricon] You released “My generation”, “LOVE & TRUTH”, “Namidairo”, along with other singles before making this album. What was the image you wanted to create for this?
[YUI] There were singles with rock songs on it and ones with wistful acoustic songs close to each other. Therefore, I thought it’d be great if the album had different colors to it. But it doesn’t mean that the lyrics all connect, more like I wrote about things I’ve experienced and thought about often. With that idea in mind, I wrote as if I was talking to myself and reconfirming everything.
“A title that is full of longing and gratitude”
[Oricon] “Love is all” (7th song) is a pretty open song, huh?
[YUI] There were reporters who didn’t listen to the music before the interview… so I ended up writing a song that they should listen because it got me so upset. Music is very important to me since it’s something I made from the bottom of my heart. I engraved those emotions into “Love is all”.
[Oricon] Without getting covering up and to speak so openly, could it be that you’ve made an enemy of some sort? But a YUI that doesn’t speak out, wouldn’t be YUI would it?
[YUI] In this world, there aren’t always people who seek approval from others. I started to believe there are people who think the same thing without realizing so. Is it really that important to have another’s approval?
[Oricon] What was on your mind when you came up with the album title?
[YUI] Something like hoping that tomorrow will be the same. Literally, I wanted to think, “I loved yesterday”. Without trampling on the past, I wished to send out a message that we should live our lives without regret. That’s how I came up with the title. Of course I’ve had some hard times, but there were people who continued to support me. To have such as past, I’m truly grateful because they helped me to where I am today. I can never forget that. This is also what that title means.
[Oricon] So without forgetting the past or yesterday, you shine on today and the future.
[YUI] Yeah. It’s not “Tomorrow will be better than yesterday”. It’s more like “I did my best yesterday”. Then when you believe that, you’ll want to believe in tomorrow too. And finally, you have to live today to the fullest without forgetting yesterday or the past. Love the day called today.
