In the 10th year since her debut, Utada Hikaru has been passing her days to the fullest. She’s released a new sing,e working on a new album, keeping up with her official blog, and spending time with her friends. All the reason for her to settle down and breathe sighs of relief. These are the days that lead to the birth of her new album, “Heart Station”.
[Utada] I really put my settled self into the album. I didn’t want to finish recording the last song so I ended up making another song called “Celebrate”. That was like being hyper over nothing. (laughs)
[Oricon] Your song “Boku wa Kuma” (I’m a bear) is really popular on the NHK chidlren’s show, “Minna no Uta” (Everyone’s song). Then on the TBS Friday drama, “Hanna Yori Dango 2”, your opening ballad “Flavor of Life” is also loved by many. Putting aside a heartbreaking parting, “Heart Station” echoes the message to everyone that even you have a love that cannot be forgotten. You wanted your song to reach everyone. An important song for everyone to know more than now, you have become happy. That’s why you wanted to make something sincere.
[Utada] But you know what? I think I wanted to do something that means more than just a simple tune that doesn’t have any substance to it. That’s why I think I made something that has a bigger reach.
[Oricon] In your 10th song, “Take 5”, you sang “in the day called today, I want to live honestly” very passionately. That’s exactly how I think you are living life. In a blink of an eye since your debut, you’ve become very popular which includes a big change of environment, right? There was a period where you became disoriented.
[Utada] Something like that… I noticed I didn’t have a good lifestyle. Long time ago, I released DVD called “20dai wa ike ike!” (Towards the 20s!) , but I really made up that title on the spot as a joke. (laughs). Then it really became the title! So I thought it was great that I’m alive.
[Oricon] In December of this year, it’ll be your 10th year anniversary, I think you will be planning something to celebrate that as well as making other decisions of the present. The young, smiling Utada Hikaru who goes at her own pace opened her heart to us in her new album, “Heart Station”. This marks a new start in her career that will be going in a different direction.
